Big Sister - Little Brother

These two dogs live together. She is the big sister and he is the little brother who thinks the sun rises and sets with her. He loves her and follows her everywhere, but do not be fooled, just because he is little and looks cuddly does not mean he can not take care of himself. He swims like a pro and runs with the biggest dogs. She hates flies, specially this time of the year, but she is not the only dog who feels that way. Swims like a fish and runs like the wind, trying to outrun some flies I bet. What a great combination of dogs. She really took him under her paw and taught him well.

Black beauty for adoption

She is a black beauty, everyone on the beach agrees on that. Kika is about 8 month old and a mutt. She is spayed and spending some time in a great foster home. They teach her to come when called, among other things. The first day on the beach she was on an extended leash, to make sure, if she runs we can catch her. It is of course delusional, because even with a leash, she could outrun us, but it does do the trick. She was surprisingly good and not straying far and did come when called, her name was no name at the time, at least that is what I called her. The next day she was on a rope and the day after that off the leash. I was impressed, she is very smart, great with other dogs and loves to play. Any takers?

How did we get from a Dumbbell to Spiderman

One of our beach buddies bought a dumbbell for the dogs, which I thought was very sweet. She had actually bought it for one particular dog, who prefers sticks, the bigger the better and in order for you to through the stick and get your attention, she likes to drop it on your toes. In this case it would not have made any difference, because everybody else, had the hots for it. I was even wondering, if that piece of wood was boiled in beef broth? They chewed on it, like it was a real bone. The dogs went crazy over it. Barking, racing on the beach and in the water. Following the one who had the dumbbell. Each dog who had it was so smitten by it and prancing around and showing off. Their were certainly no rules for some dogs, even putting someones head under the water, because he was so mad, that she had gotten to it first. In the end nobody held any grudge, they all new, it was just a game and the bottom line, is to have fun. I never get bored watching them or watching nature. Everything is so raw and right in front of them, nothing hidden. The rules are clear, who ever is in charge has the upper hand and the dogs respect that. I was surprised that the obsession lasted for days. Now, they are still playing with it, but the level of intensity has changed and then boredom sets in. One of the dogs had found a children's toy, spiderman. I was in hope to be able to give it to a kid from our beach moms, unfortunately it did not even make it to the end of the walk. The dogs new, that I had it in the bag and persistent as they are, did not leave me alone. So I caved, spiderman got wet, torn into pieces and that was the death of spiderman.

Wildlife Rescue of the Hamptons, NY

Triage in the busy Wildlife Rescue Hospital between the Cedar Waxwing and the Osprey, always to much work and animals in need for medical assistance. Never a dull moment and even doing a lot of repetitious work, like feeding over and over again or fixing the cracked turtles shell for a long time to come. You never get the feeling, that it is to much. They treat the animals with respect and like it is the first time.

Wildlife Rescue of the Hamptons, NY

The Northern Gannet is totally relaxed and feels like at home at the center.

I do not know what it is about Possum's, but I think they are extremely cute, specially when they are young. Just look at those faces. They are born at a young age and climb into the pouch were they will attache them selfs to a teat and live their for 2-4 month. After detaching from the teat, they will leave the pouch.

Three of the wonderful people at Wildlife Rescue Center, who balance the day with caregiving, knowledge, expertise and a great sense of humor.

Wildlife Rescue of the Hamptons, NY

The work never stops, if you do not have to clean cages or taking care of animals, you have to keep up with a load of paper work, making sure that the charts are up to date and have all the information so the next person who will look at them, knows exactly what to do. Like in a hospital for humans you rely on the accuracy of the chart. Checking on a stool sample, to make sure that the animal has no parasites and so on, it never ends. Weather you care for a Robin, Chipmunk, Bunny, Cedar Waxwing, Osprey, Possum, Woodchuck, Swan, Duck, Squirrel, Grey Horned Owl and many more, the care and compassion is the same. Thank you so much for your patience and letting me come back to do some more taping. Some of the material is a little blurry, but I hope it does not take away from all the wonderful work you can witness at the Wildlife Rescue Center. The website is www.wildliferescuecenter.org, if anybody is interested to volunteer there time, I can promise you, it is very rewarding, I do transport, when I have the time, or if you want to donate money just give them a call 631-728- Wild.

One of four Video Clips to come, of the Wildlife Rescue Center in the Hamptons, NY

We are very fortunate to have a Wildlife Rescue Hospital near by. The Center is about 10 years old. It started all in a basement and has come a very long way. The Hospital is open from 8.00 am - 8.00 pm were you can get some advise, how to handle Wildlife or drop off an injured animal. At night you will get a pager and someone will call you back. Always call 631-728-Wild first, not every time does the animal need to be rescued. When a baby bird falls out of the nest, that happens a lot before the birds starts to fly. A baby deer is left by his mother for four hours, so she can travel faster when they are very young and then she comes back to collect them. The work is endless, but very rewarding. Feeding the baby birds every 1/2 hour - 1 hour. The Mammals every hour, cleaning the cages I do not know how many times a day, weighing to make sure, that they are gaining weight. Medicating, cleaning wounds and dealing with the loss of the once you cared for and tried to save. It is a not-for-profit organization and relies on the Stuff, Volunteers and generosity of the Donors to make it all work. The goal is dedicated to rehabilitate and release the animals were there were found. The compassion, caring and kindness for the Wildlife is overwhelming, that it only humbles you, when you walk in.

Doggie's World Cup 2010

Most dogs love balls, big and small, tennis balls are easier because they fit better in their mouth, but that does not mean, that challenges are not welcome. On that note our dogs love to play ball, but not everybody at the same level, some just for fun, others are more competitive and focused and do not give up lightly under any circumstance. Today, somebody brought a Soccer Ball in the spirit of the World Cup 2010 to our beach. The soonest the dogs saw the ball, nothing else seemed to matter. After some basic instructions were everybody was listening very carefully and showing them how it is done playing in the World Cup, they started to jump, run, trying to grab the ball with their teeth, almost mad that they could not and of course barking at each other. The good advise was throwing out the window. Their are no rules in play, nobody was keeping score or blew the whistle for a foul move. It was doggie free style and free style it was. At some point I think somebody threw the ball into the water and we thought, that would be the end of the ball. The dogs where trying to grab it and each time they did that, the ball got out further and further, until they decided to come back, turned around in a big loop and bringing the ball back to shore. It was funny, most of the dogs where standing in the water and watching, like in a stadium and we humans where cheering them all on. What a great group of dogs and humans we have on our beach. I had so much fun just watching it all.

The Story of Nigel told by his beautiful owner

This little Beagle, Nigel is one of his names, is one very lucky guy. From growing up in a very abusive and neglected household, mostly caged and beaten. Ending up with this loving couple is what he and every other animal deserves. I would have never thought that this little guy was abused. After hearing the story and looking at Nigel now, one can see what love and caring can do to an animal and human, if treated right. Nigel loves to play and the older guys teaching him how to lift his leg or rolling in some stinky fish. Go Nigel go, what a great little guy.

A beautiful day at the Pond

I love all the dog walks, but the pond's are special to me. Maybe because of the high grass and water channels where people go kayaking. The wildlife seems different, one is right among it all. I saw a swan in the distance and a nest of osprey. The little beach at the edge of the water is softer and easier on the dogs feet and everybody gets the idea of fun right away. Even dogs who are not that fond of water, get into it and start running around and chasing each other. Chasing seems to be a big thing among dogs. They love to chase and being chased, looking back if someone follows them or bait them with some stick or something more delicious like dead something. It reminds me off when we as children played robber and sherif. I always hated to be chased. Every time someone was chasing me, I started screaming and almost felt paralyzed and got caught often.

Maybe old, but with a twist

This older girl is about 13 years of age and I have been taking care of her on and off. The owner sold the house and she is going to move. So this will probably be the last time that I am having her at my place. There is just something about her, what made me fall in love with her. Just look at that face, how can you not fall for her. She is comical, smart and just imagine a little bit more fur on her, good looking. She has a very strong constitution. Few years ago, when I had a problem with kennel cough, she was one of the few who did not get it. Most had it mild some got really sick, I used to boost up their immune system with some vitamin A,B and C, that way it did not get out of hand. Anyway, the funny thing was, that even so, she was loved by her owner, but because of money problems not always getting the best care. When I called him, where he had bought the dog food, because I was running out. He told me at the texaco station. The brand name "Dog Food". Needless to say I changed the brand. Sometimes I wonder, all those other pampered pooches, best food, grooming, all the vaccination in tact got sick. Are we as a society overdoing things? Where does one draw the line, what is bad for your pet, even so the good intentions are their? Well, I will miss her dearly.

What is it about the rolling in the sand/grass

They all do it, big and small. Is it pure pleasure and bliss, or just an itch. It certainly looks like a lot of fun. The legs up in the air, the wiggle of the butt, back and forth, the face in a twitch of ecstasy. Not a care in the world. Does not matter to them to look silly or not, as long as the enjoy them selfs. Most of them do the roll by them self. The position is extremely vulnerable, they are exposed to anyone who would want to harm them, so maybe that is one of the reasons to do it when they feel save.

Fun, Fun, Fun

What more is their to say. I do not know if I should conceder my self lucky, fortunate or blessed, surrounded by so much happiness and playfulness every single day. It never changes, only the player's are different, but the theme is the same and it never gets boring, it does not matter how often I see dogs play. A friend told me the other day, after watching me coming out of the water, putting my t-shirt on and go running into the water with my camera. He said it reminded him of children playing in the water and having fun. That is exactly how I felt, just staying and being in the moment, doing the things you love the most. The dogs encourage you, because how can you help it not to join in and being part of the pack.

Welcome home Snowbirds, Visitors and Old Timers

Some of the fun things on the beach are, that you never know who shows up, accept all are their for a good time. Snowbirds are heading east, once in a while visitors are showing up and then there are the old timers. Their feet are conditioned after being on that rugged beach for a long time. They are comfortable running on the pebbly beach, our beach is a tough beach. The sharp and pointy shells, glass, metal and rocks make it not easy to walk, never mind running. Some dogs feet are tougher then others, but mainly the heavier dogs are having a harder time to get used to it, you can tell by the waddle at the end of the walk. But it is all worth it, the rewards are great, making new friends, mending the old once and keeping the new once going. By the end of the walk every body is happy, looking forward for some cold water and a little or long nap.
